2 | NavianHawaii.org Aloha friends, I have been deeply pondering the meaning of kama‘aina these past several months. Kama‘aina is more than just a “local” who can get a discount to Hanauma Bay. It describes one who comes from the land. A 2010 Maui No Ka Oi magazine article by Tom Stevens quotes Kiope Raymond, “Literally, kama‘aina means ‘I am a child of that which feeds me. I therefore have a duty to it. I need to malama [care for] that which sustains me.” This concept has been our driving value for 45 years. We have been fed through your donations, good thoughts, prayers and trust as you asked us to care for those most precious to you. But, more than just sustaining us, you have asked us to serve you. As a kama‘aina organization, we have a sacred obligation to care for the community. Instead of focusing on a “profit margin” catered to owners and investors, our priority lies in what we call a “care margin.” This extends our attention to those who need care the most—including those who lack the means to pay for it themselves. In working with our Board of Directors to find Navian’s next president and CEO, we made sure to look for someone who is willing to put people first. We are so happy to have found Dan Haire, who driven by a desire to return to a legacy nonprofit organization, will leverage his expertise and propel Navian Hawaii to new heights. I am incredibly thankful for my time here at Navian. While my return was only temporary, the impact of our collective efforts will resonate long beyond my tenure. I remain deeply committed to advocating for the organization and its mission, which holds a special place in my heart. It’s not fair to mention just two of you because you were all so good, but Barbara was especially appreciative of Wes Sugai’s help, and I was especially conscious of Megan’s good work.” George Read “We thank all of Navian’s ohana.
