2 | NavianHawaii.org Coming Home “Home is the place where, when you go there, they have to take you in.” Robert Frost is credited with this quote. But sometimes home is the place you left because it was time, but when they call you back to help, you have to go. We have so many stories about going home: “the Prodigal Son” goes home after making mistakes, countless Hallmark Christmas videos weave syrupy stories of homecomings, and families reunite back home after the death of a parent. Coming home brings about so many feelings; fears of what to expect, regret and forgiveness, marveling at how much things have changed or peace and quiet. I didn’t expect to be coming home, coming back to Hospice Hawaii, which now goes by a different name. I didn’t know how the new family was going to react to seeing me walk in the door. I was hoping that some of my old “family” members, from before I retired in 2017, were still there. Anytime you are called home to help, it is because something needs righting. That’s what the situation was here at Navian Hawaii. An unexpected turnover in the leadership role leaves everyone in a little bit of shock. Folks are uncertain of the future, and our community partners are left wondering what will happen. But what amazed me the most was how ready everyone at Navian was to simply remember the core values and mission of care. Everyone was ready to remember that their first question in pondering a treatment decision will always be, “What is the right thing to do for this particular patient and family?” My role here is just to serve as an interim President and CEO while the Board conducts a careful search for the next CEO. And more importantly, my role is to restore a focus on quality care, a focus on investing in training and gaining expertise for all our staff and of course, a focus on serving neighbors in their time of need. And so, I offer two simple messages in what may be the only column I write for our newsletter. For our community partners who trust us with your patients, thank you. Our care for them will be the very best we can offer. And for our Navian Hawaii family, thank you for welcoming me home with open arms and lots of laughter. It is an honor to serve with you. 860 Iwilei Road • Honolulu, HI 96817 Tel: (808) 924-9255 • Fax: (808) 922-9161 BOARD OF DIRECTORS CHAIRPERSON Michael James Yani Brookfield Properties VICE-CHAIRPERSON Jennifer Ann Walker HMSA PRESIDENT & CEO Ken Zeri, RN, MS Navian Hawaii TREASURER Rick Keene Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation SECRETARY Norman Cheng Starn O’Toole Marcus & Fisher PAST CHAIRPERSON Kevin T.
