2 | NavianHawaii.org A little over three years ago, our nonprofit organization embarked on a new journey. After 40 years, we made the decision to change our name from Hospice Hawaii to Navian Hawaii. One of the biggest questions I often get asked is, “Why?” And the biggest reason is because we decided to launch our Integrated Care program to provide palliative care services and were told patients would shy away from this type of care if we continued to have hospice in our name. Navian was selected as our new name as it combined two words that are at the core of what we do – as navigators, we provide clarity and guidance through times of uncertainty and as guardians, we care for people and protect their wishes. We have remained true to our roots as an organization founded by the community for the community and true to our mission to bring hope, reduce fears and impact lives. We’re fortunate that end-of-life care is now accepted as sound medical practice and that the knowledge that has been developed can be applied to improving the quality of life of those who have a serious illness. We now offer hospice care, concurrent care and palliative care, which allows us to meet our patients where they are, based on their needs. Take Harvey Young, our cover story patient, as an example. He entered our service through HMSA’s Supportive Care Program, which provides an extra layer of support to patients with serious conditions while they also undergo curative treatment. We’re beyond thrilled that he is thriving and actually no longer in our program! Our team at Navian Hawaii is there when it matters most, whether it’s providing specialized medical and emotional support for patients living with a serious illness, or helping patients and their families face the end of life, with hope and without fear and surrounded by unconditional love. We are there to provide relief and reassurance during a patient and family’s most difficult times and it’s both a privilege and an honor.
